If your previous car insurance was cancelled is there any way to get out of having to pay balance up front?

I was out of a job for awhile and my family was paying my car insurance. Then they suddenly stopped. I had to leave my job before my auto insurance policy was up. So my insurance got cancelled for non-payment. Now I'-m thinking of having a car again and I know there are penalties for people with cancelled insurance. Is there any way I can get out of having to pay an entire year policy up front? I just can'-t afford that right now.
