AARP is a club. They don't sell insurance. They refer their subscribers over to a company like Hartford. They shop the insurance out every year, and every year, you could be shifting to a different company. Yehaw. The rates you get, will vary wildly depending on where you live. There's no way to know how good they are, without shopping out your insurance every few years - which you should do anyway.

AARP is not an insurance company. AARP uses the Hartford insurance company for their home and auto. Hartford is one of the major players. They do not raise the rates sharply for no reason. They will raise rates if their losses exceed premium, just like any other insurance company.Source(s):Independent Agent

AARP is not an insurance company, but they do refer members to an insurance company.I found another posting on this topic, and it said the rate quoted through AARP was higher than going direct to the insurance company. (Someone here says that might be the Hartford.)If this is true, I suggest you find a Hartford agent, and get a direct quote from the Hartford. And then compare that to the AARP quote. If the AARP quote is higher, and I assume that is because the Hartford is paying a “finders fee” for the referral. I am only guessing about that, but that is a reasonable possibility.
